When AI Challenges a Real-World Flooring Inspection

AI is everywhere today. Like most technology, it can be beneficial or harmful depending on how it is used.
The flooring industry has always adopted new tools. Hardwood flooring evolved from hand-nailing to pneumatic nailers.
Moisture meters became more sophisticated.
Seaming irons improved.
Tools such as the Kool Glide and Seamer Down changed carpet installation techniques.
Each advancement provided another resource to help trained professionals perform their work more effectively.
AI should be viewed the same way—as a tool, not a replacement for knowledge and experience.
This distinction becomes particularly important in the inspection profession.
A true flooring inspection requires hands-on examination supported by actual, verifiable facts.
The inspector is physically on site—observing, touching, measuring, testing, photographing, and evaluating the flooring, substrate, installation, and surrounding conditions.
AI cannot perform that inspection.
Yet today, an inspection report can be uploaded into an AI program with instructions to identify weaknesses, dispute conclusions, or develop arguments intended to impeach the inspector’s findings.
There is nothing wrong with challenging an inspection report. A professional report should withstand scrutiny.
But an AI-generated response is not contradictory field evidence.
AI wasn’t standing in the room. It didn’t operate the moisture meter, measure the flooring, examine the substrate, inspect the installation, or observe the conditions documented by the inspector.
AI also has limitations. It can misinterpret technical documents, take information out of context, reference the wrong section, or produce an answer that sounds authoritative while being factually incorrect. In technical inspection work, every reference still needs to be verified against the actual source document.
There is an important difference between challenging an opinion and disproving a fact.
If a documented field measurement exists, generating alternative explanations does not change that measurement. If photographs document an installation condition, hypothetical possibilities do not make the physical evidence disappear.
Challenge the methodology. Challenge the applicable standard. Produce contradictory testing or documentation. Conduct another competent on-site inspection.
Those are legitimate technical disagreements.
But alternative possibilities generated by AI are not, by themselves, evidence that an inspection is wrong.
A flooring nailer does not make someone a hardwood installer. A moisture meter does not make someone an inspector. And AI does not replace the training, field experience, judgment, and responsibility required to determine what the physical evidence actually means.
Technology changes. Tools change. Facts do not.
